The most important factor about thumbnail is it should be Realistic.
Resolution of 1280* 720
Can incorporate light text.
Can use PicMonkey to customize Thumbnails.
can use image which is not in the video.
Make your thumnail pop-out. Use filters.
Check if the thumnail is clear even if zoomed in and out. Check for text whether it is visible while zooming.
Youtube will also suggest you a thumbnail for your video. I would prefer creating one.
